Wichita Woman Injured In Car Accident

A Wichita woman was injured in a car accident last week when the van she was driving collided with a pickup truck. The crash occurred on highway 254 when the driver of the pickup attempted to pass the van.

The pickup was driven by a 16-year-old from Benton.
The driver of the van, Elaine Hauser, 62, of Wichita, then lost control, causing the van to roll two full turns before coming to rest in the field beside the highway.
Hauser was taken to St. Francis Hospital in serious condition, with facial cuts and cuts to the head. The driver of the pick-up was not injured.

Authorities said the wreck happened around 11:45 in the eastbound lane of 254 between El Dorado and Wichita.

Wichita Woman Killed in Devastating Collision

A Wichita woman on her way home from work, was killed in a horrific two-vehicle collision on Friday morning.

The woman, 36, of Wichita, was traveling south in her 2002 Honda Accord on US 81 around the curve when authorities believe she over-corrected, causing the vehicle to "power slide," (also know as drifting light) which left her car sideways on the roadway.

A man, 71, of Wellington, driving a Dodge Caravan, struck the Accord broadside. The force of impact tore her vehicle into two pieces. The front portion of the car was completely torn away.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was taken to Sumner Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

Police Chase Ends in Car Accident

A police chase led to a car accident in east Wichita on Friday at 9:30 a.m. Officers attempted to pull over a man for minor traffic violations but the driver sped away.

The police chase didn't last very long. The driver crossed over the intersection at Webb and Center and crashed into another vehicle. The driver sustained minor injuries and the suspect was caught while trying to run from the scene of the accident.

Officers are unsure why he fled but they believe it may have been because he was either wanted or had a suspended license.

Just moments before the crash, police had called off the chase.

Driver Doing Well after Crash on Turnpike

Wearing a seatbelt can save your life and a 49-year-old Lawrence woman is living proof. The woman was involved in a single-car accident, at 1pm on Friday, on the Kansas Turnpike. Listed in fair condition Friday evening, she is expected to recover.

She was traveling east on Interstate 70 when her car started to drift off to the side of the road. When she tried to steer back on to the road she overcorrected and droved her car off the roadway into a ditch where the vehicle overturned, said the Kansas Turnpike Authority crash report.

The accident happened two miles east of the Topeka service station, approximately ten miles west of Lawrence. The driver was transported by helicopter to Kansas City University Medical Center to be treated for back injuries.

KWCH Reporter Injured In Car Accident

Alana Rocha, KWCH 12, was critically injured in a car accident last Saturday. Wichita Police believe the driver that crashed into her car was driving while drunk.

Police say they first spotted the driver because he almost crashed into another car. They thought he was stopping when he pulled into a parking spot but the man kept on driving through an alleyway and back onto the road.

He was traveling between 60-70 mph when he ran three red lights before clipping a car when crossing the street before crashing into the passenger side of Rocha's car.

39-year-old Albert Faldet was taken into custody late Thursday afternoon. He was charged in Alana's accident and a previous one Friday afternoon.

Rocha remains in ICU at Via Christi-St. Francis Hospital. As of Sunday afternoon, she remains in critical condition - but is showing some improvement.

Woman Hit by SUV

A woman was hit by an SUV last night, just before 7pm when she stepped in the way of an oncoming car, Wichita Falls Police report.

The accident took place at the intersection of Harrison and Elizabeth. The 35-year-old woman failed to yield the car and that is when she was hit by a Hyundai.

She was transported to the hospital where she was treated and then released.

Super Bowl Party Hosts: Liable for Guests Drinking and Driving

The insurance industry financed a survey that says many Americans that are planning a Super Bowl Party are underinsured and open to potential lawsuits and financial ruin.

The data shows that of an estimated 28.5 million people hosting a party between the holidays and the Super Bowl, 21.3 million do not have a personal umbrella insurance policy, liable for potential lawsuits should the worst happen. The remaining 7.2 million hosts said they don't even know what coverage they have.

If you a host a party, the guest drinks and drives, causing an accident, the host can be held responsible in over thirty states. Interestingly, 53 percent of party hosts do believe they should be held accountable; however most haven't taken any steps to protect themselves.

There are many different ways to protect yourself and lower your risk when hosting a party, according to Lanier Upshaw, a Lakeland Insurance Company.

Agencies' Suggestions:
â€¢ Limit your guest list to those you know.
â€¢ Host a party at a restaurant or bar that has a liquor license, rather than in a home or office.
â€¢ Provide filling food for guests and alternative non-alcoholic beverages.
â€¢ Schedule entertainment or activities that do not involve alcohol.
â€¢ Arrange transportation or overnight accommodations for those who should not drive.
â€¢ Stop serving alcohol at least one hour before the party is scheduled to end.
â€¢ Consider hiring an off-duty police officer to discreetly monitor guests' sobriety or handle any alcohol-related problems as guests leave.
â€¢ Stay alert, always remembering your responsibilities as a host.
â€¢ Review your liability insurance coverage.

4 Killed in Car Accidents as Snow Storm Rolls across Plains

A winter storm rolled across the Plains states on Saturday and with it caused several car accidents that killed at least four people within two states.

Heavy snow hit western and central Kansas, limiting visibility and creating hazardous driving conditions.

A couple and their 20-month-old daughter were killed when their car drove off U.S. 50 and collided with two other cars, said authorities. The couple's 6-year-old daughter was critically injured.

In Oklahoma, a 5-year-old boy died after he was thrown from a sport utility vehicle that rolled over after leaving a snow-covered highway.

In Kansas, a heavy snow warning was in effect until 6am. Sunday the areas from Wichita westward, said the National Weather Service. Up to six inches of snow were predicted for some sections.

Further south, a storm spared much of Oklahoma, though snow fell in western and north-central regions. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission reported Saturday night that about 36,000 customers in the state remained without power a week after a crippling ice storm.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Saturday the latest round of weather hadn't caused significant problems on state roads, but falling temperatures overnight could lead to frozen bridges and overpasses. The ice storm was blamed for 25 deaths, most in motor-vehicle accidents.

Accident at Deadly Intersection

Two people escaped serious injury in a car accident this morning at U.S. 54 ands 215th Street in Goddard - the very same intersection which a 26-year-old man was killed at just last night.

A woman was heading west on U.S. 54, attempting to turn onto southbound 215th, Police Chief George Bloesing said. A man that was driving east on U.S. 54 hit her car, veered into a ditch and crashed into a utility pole that fell and struck a third vehicle. How they were both without serious injury, I don't know, said Bloesing.

In Thursday night's fatal accident, Jason Whitaker of Wichita had just left his job at the Dillons warehouse when he attempted to turn north on 215th from eastbound U.S. 54. His Mitsubishi car was hit at about 6:09 p.m. by a Dodge pickup heading west, Bloesing said.

Whitaker, 26, died at the scene. It is the third fatal accident at that intersection in five months.

Bloesing said he hopes to meet with Kansas Department of Transportation officials to review traffic patterns and see if changes need to be made at the intersection.

Two Die in Collision near Independence

On Monday, two Cherryvale residents were killed in a car-semi collision east of Independence in Montgomery County. Gerald Steffen, 75 and Jeanette Steffen 68, were dead at the scene of the 1 p.m. accident, reported the Kansas Highway patrol.

The report said Gerald Steffen was driving a 1996 Nissan pickup truck east on US-160 highway when he failed to stop at a stop sign and drove into the path of a 2006 freightliner semi-truck heading southbound on US-169 Highway.

The driver of the Freightliner, Christopher M. Hurt 31, of Justin, Texas, and a passenger, David W. Robison, 44, of Irving. Texas, weren't injured in the collision.
