Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Hummus

378 people claim they have experienced salmonella poisoning after ingesting food purchased from the pars Cove Persian Cuisine booth at the Taste of Chicago. This number is up from the 126 cases originally reported, according to the Chicago Department of Health.

Two thirds of the 378 reported cases have been confirmed as salmonella illness. More test results are pending. Amongst 32 people tested, 18 have been confirmed to have Salmonella Heidelberg, a common strand in the United States.

Most of the people affected by the Salmonella outbreak live in the Chicago area. Many of the received reports were from people who were ill but recovered.

Health officials said it's too early to say how the bacteria got into the food remains unknown. But they confirmed Friday that the hummus shirazi- a salad made of fresh herb, tomato and cucumber is considered the only source of the salmonella outbreak.

Taste of Chicago is a tradition of the city. The food safety requirement is intense, according to health officials. Vendors are trained to prepare and serve food. And food served in about 70 booths is inspected four times a day from early morning to midnight. Salmonella outbreak associated with Pars Cove's hummus shirazi is the first associated with the event in the last 20 years, according to the city health department.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole

FDA Warns Consumers about Olive Recall

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers about olives that were recalled due to possible contamination of a deadly bacterium.

The recalled olives are manufactured by an Italian company and sold nationwide under private brand names such as Roland, Borrelli and Vantai. The olives may have been contaminated with a botulism causing bacterium. The affected olives have product codes that start with "G" and three to four digits following.

Botulism symptoms include: double vision, dizziness, trouble speaking and swallowing and muscle weakness. There have been no reports of illness in connection with the olives.

If you are unsure if the jar of olives you have is possibly contaminated, call the store where you bought it from for a full refund or discard the jar immediately.
Rat Poison cause of Pet Food Recall

State Officials announced rat poison was found in the recalled pet food from last week and linked to the deaths of at least 16 cats and dogs.

At this time it is unclear just how many deaths could end up linked to the "cuts and gravy" style foods produced by Menu Foods that is sold under 95 brand names. Scientists are expected more deaths to be announced in the coming weeks.

Aminopterin, a cancer drug once used to induce abortions and still used to kill rats in other countries, is the substance identified in the recalled pet food, said the state Agriculture Commissioner.

The Federal Government prohibits the use of aminopetrin for killing rodents within the United States. Officials would not speculate how the poison got into the pet food.

The pet deaths led to a recall of over 60 million pouches and cans of cat and dog food the company sold throughout North America.

After Friday's announcement, Menu Foods food advised retailers to remove all brands from their shelves, a company spokesman said, though the recall still applies only to the dog and cat foods identified on its Web site since March 16. Those cover cans and pouches of food packaged from Dec. 3 through March 6.

"The recall has not been expanded," a Menu spokesman said Saturday.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Christina Cole
