Nokia announced a recall of more than 46 million of its BL-5C cell phone batteries, because they can potentially overheat while recharging.

The defective batteries can be found in as many as 52 different phone models, manufactured by Matsushita, between December 2005 and November 2006.

Nokia advises consumers to check the front label on their cell battery for "Nokia" and "BL-5C." The battery identification number is 26 characters and can be located on the bottom. Please note: if the battery identification number is less than 26 characters, it is not included in the recall.

Approximately one hundred incidents of the batteries overheating have been reported to Nokia. However, no property damage or serious injuries have been reported. Nearly all of the reported incidents happened while the battery was recharging.

Nokia is offering a free cell phone replacement battery. Find more information and view a list of all recalled Nokia phone batteries.
